About Father's Day
Father's Day honors fathers on the third Sunday in June. The idea came from Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who was raised by her widowed father, and the first Father's Day was held in Spokane on June 19, 1910.
President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father's Day in 1966, and in 1972 President Richard Nixon signed the law that made it a permanent national observance.
