About Juneteenth
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, announcing that all enslaved people in Texas were free. The name joins “June” and “nineteenth”.
Communities, especially in Texas, celebrated the day for generations before it became a national holiday. President Joe Biden signed the law making Juneteenth National Independence Day a federal holiday on June 17, 2021.
How the date is set
Juneteenth is fixed on June 19. When that is a Saturday, federal employees get Friday, June 18, off; when it is a Sunday, they get Monday, June 20. Its official federal name is “Juneteenth National Independence Day”.
