About Christmas
Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus and is one of the most widely observed holidays in the United States, marked by church services, gift giving and family gatherings for people of many backgrounds.
It has been a federal holiday since 1870, one of the four original holidays alongside New Year's Day, Independence Day and Thanksgiving.
How the date is set
Christmas is fixed on December 25. When that is a Saturday, federal employees get Friday, December 24, off; when it is a Sunday, they get Monday, December 26.
What is open
As a federal holiday, federal government offices close, and most banks and post offices close as well. It is also a New York Stock Exchange holiday.
