About New Year's Day
New Year's Day marks the first day of the calendar year. Celebrations usually begin the night before, on New Year's Eve, with midnight countdowns such as the ball drop in New York's Times Square.
It is one of the four original federal holidays: Congress first recognized it in 1870, together with Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, initially for federal employees in the District of Columbia.

New Year's Day is fixed on January 1. When that is a Saturday, federal employees get the day off on Friday, December 31, of the year before; when it is a Sunday, they get Monday, January 2.
