About Independence Day
Independence Day celebrates July 4, 1776, when the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. Fireworks, parades and cookouts mark the day in towns across the country.
It is one of the four original federal holidays that Congress recognized in 1870, alongside New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
