About Veterans Day
Veterans Day honors everyone who has served in the US armed forces. Its date comes from the armistice that ended the fighting of World War I at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, and it first became a federal holiday as Armistice Day in 1938.
Congress renamed it Veterans Day in 1954. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 moved it to a Monday in October, but a 1975 law returned it to November 11. Memorial Day remembers those who died in service; Veterans Day thanks all who served.
How the date is set
Veterans Day is fixed on November 11. When that is a Saturday, federal employees get Friday, November 10, off; when it is a Sunday, they get Monday, November 12.

As a federal holiday, federal government offices close, and most banks and post offices close as well. The New York Stock Exchange stays open.
