The federal holiday on the third Monday in February is officially called Washington's Birthday, after George Washington, who was born on February 22, 1732. Most calendars, stores and state governments call it Presidents' Day.
Congress made Washington's Birthday a federal holiday in 1879. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 moved it to a Monday, which means it now never falls on Washington's actual birthday.
