About Columbus Day
Columbus Day marks the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. It became a federal holiday on the second Monday in October under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968.
A growing number of states and cities observe the same day as Indigenous Peoples' Day, honoring the Native peoples who lived in the Americas long before 1492.
How the date is set
Columbus Day is the second Monday in October, so it always falls between October 8 and 14.
What is open
As a federal holiday, federal government offices close, and most banks and post offices close as well. The New York Stock Exchange stays open.
