About Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a day for family meals and giving thanks, traditionally tied to the 1621 harvest feast shared by the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag people. Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving in 1863, and Congress recognized it as a federal holiday in 1870.

In 1941 Congress fixed the date as the fourth Thursday in November. The day after, known as Black Friday, is not a federal holiday, though some states and employers give it off.

How the date is set

Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November, so it always falls between November 22 and 28.

What is open

As a federal holiday, federal government offices close, and most banks and post offices close as well. It is also a New York Stock Exchange holiday.
