About Memorial Day
Memorial Day honors the men and women who died while serving in the US military. It began after the Civil War as Decoration Day: on May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan called for May 30 to be set aside for decorating the graves of the war dead, and the first national observance was held at Arlington National Cemetery that year.
Congress made Decoration Day a federal holiday in 1888. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 moved Memorial Day to the last Monday in May, creating the three-day weekend now seen as the unofficial start of summer.
How the date is set
Memorial Day is the last Monday in May, so it always falls between May 25 and 31.
What is open
As a federal holiday, federal government offices close, and most banks and post offices close as well. It is also a New York Stock Exchange holiday.
