About Labor Day
Labor Day honors American workers and the labor movement. The first Labor Day was held in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, organized by the Central Labor Union, and Oregon became the first state to make it a legal holiday in 1887.
Congress made the first Monday in September a federal holiday in 1894, in a law signed by President Grover Cleveland. The long weekend is widely seen as the unofficial end of summer.
How the date is set
Labor Day is the first Monday in September, so it always falls between September 1 and 7.
